Re: Ring-like Operas: Lurline
Wow. Never heard of that one. Where did you learn about it?

Re: Ring-like Operas
I've long wondered about this opera, which enjoyed a certain amount of popularity in the 19th and early 20th centuries, while completely dissimilar to the Ring musically. Excerpts I've heard sound attractive and definitely French (if we understand the ways in which Berlioz, Gounod, Meyerbeer, Bizet ...

Re: Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg
Wow, this is an aweseome opera. It was my first Wagner opera. I remember watching the Levine DVD with my son who had never heard Meistersinger before and he loved it! I need to spend some more time with this opera. I have six Meistersinger DVDs and have only watched two of them. So some great times...

Re: How to upload an Avatar (profile image)
Forums look so much nicer when users have images associated with them. Follow these instructions to get an Avatar/Profile pic. 1) On your computer, create an image a maximum of 150px x 150px, which is actually pretty small. The forum doesn't seem to have a feature for reducing image sizes. It simpl...

Re: Your first impressions of Wagner's music
I don't recall now when or where the sounds of Wagner first caught my attention. I'm pretty sure it wasn't here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=weHNnsMY82A My first clear, and indelible, impressions of Wagner came from some 78rpm records I heard at the home of a friend when I was probably eleven or...

Re: Elizabeth Schwarzkopf
I'm currently listening to Elizabeth Schwarzkopf "portrays Romantic Heroines" LP with Christa Ludwig as her mezzo foil as she sings from Tannhauser and Lohengrin. It's typical Schwarzkopf I guess, with emphasis on text and beauty of tone, and of course her sweet vibrato is all over it. By no means ...

Re: Favourite books, and currently reading
Here is a good one. Has complete English libretto. Pretty sure it is the libretto from Goodall's Ring too. https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/51iVQ4waI4L._SX336_BO1,204,203,200_.jpg The Goodall Ring does use the Porter translation. It's a "singing" translation that strives for compreh...

Re: Wagners Ring--Complete Cycles by Same Conductor
I am not sure what my favorite is. Been hanging onto Sawallisch 1989 as my favorite, but now listening to some of my other Rings to see if another will become the favorite. Here is what I have (Commercial releases, not listing OperaDepot or other such): Sawallisch 1968 (I really like this one) Swar...

Hooray! Thanks, VdD! (I did have to type it in, since I don't know what the "YouTube button" is. You can't assume ANYTHING when talking computer to this kid.)
